An international institution, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is a military and political alliance made up of 30 European and North American countries. All the Alliance's decisions are made by consensus. Every member nation, regardless of size or importance, has an equal voice in discussions and decisions.

The Alliance's primary mission is to safeguard and defend NATO's territory and inhabitants. The Washington Treaty, Article 5 of NATO’s founding charter, establishes the Alliance's collective defense commitment. It specifies that an attack on any of the members is considered an attack on all others. Only once in NATO's history has Article 5 been used, on September 12, 2001, the day after terrorist attacks on the United States.
